Random blurb about my friend’s website

Before I get started on this little post, I just want to make it very clear that my friend in no way paid me to talk about his business or even place a link to it. I’m doing this because I mentioned in my blog that I would highlight some of my friend’s websites. I’m a nice guy and like to share some link love. It may not be relevant, but the point is to actually help out my friends. Below you’ll find a few sections and I plan to update this page weekly with links to some of their websites.

The first website that I want to talk about is my friend Ron’s website. Ron is one of my best friends and he was actually in my wedding. He was one of my groomsmen and has always been there for me. Recently, Ron got engaged and him and his wife decided to get married in Florida. I’m not really sure why, but that’s his decision not me. I’ll be at his wedding no matter what because he’s that good of a friend to me. Ron called me up a couple of weeks ago and told me about how he was having such a hard time finding a wedding venue in orlando. I said jokingly that he should start a website about it. I’m that guy that says he’ll start a website about any subject that sounds good. He took my idea seriously. Since him and his wife were looking for wedding venues in Orlando, FL he decided that he’d make a wedding website about wedding venues in Orlando. It sounds like a really stupid idea, but I think he’s smart. He identified a problem and came up with a solution. He’s still in the process of building out the website, but he’s going to feature wedding venues based on some criteria. He’s getting a lot of his information off of the popular wedding website called The Knot. You’ve probably heard about it if you’ve gotten married. I remember my wife always telling me to go check out The Knot when we were engaged and planning our wedding. That’s actually how we found the venue we decided to get married at.  Enough talking about me because this post is about Ron’s new company. So the idea is to provide a simple way for couples to find wedding venues in Orlando. That’s it.

Update on August 14th – Well this situation got even funnier. As you just read, I had a buddy decide to start a website where he features wedding venues. After posting that to this website, one of my college roommates told me that he was going to start a weddings website for finding a wedding venue in Dallas, TX. I think it’s really hilarious that he decided to copy that idea and apply it to dallas wedding venues instead of Orlando. After he told me that, I put him in contact with the friend of mine that started the Orlando wedding venues website and they started working together. They’ve decided that they’re going to do this for some other major cities because people are actively looking for wedding venues. I think it’s really cool how a website can bring people together and I like that I’m in the middle of it. I guess we’ll see how it turns out.

Another Friend’s Website – Christian Jewelry Store

Recently I had another old friend contact me to tell me about the online business he has started. As mentioned above and if it’s not obvious, my goal with this repurposed website is to post about my friends websites and share the love. I’m hoping all the sites get some traffic out of these little posts, but you never know. I’d appreciate it if you at least checked them out. Who knows, you may find something you like. Back to my original post – this friend sent me an email to tell me about his new christian jewelry store. When I was growing up, this guy was always the guy going to church on Sundays and even Wednesdays. I used to think it was really weird that people went to church during the middle of the week, but he insisted on it because he was a hardcore Christian. When we would hang out after school he would try to talk me in to going to his church with me on the weekend. I could never get myself out of bed in time for the service, but he remained a Christian and still goes to church every week. When he sent me the email about his christian jewelry store I was a little surprised. He never really seemed like an entrepreneur to me, but here he was with an ecommerce store that sells christian jewelry.

When you think about Christian Jewelry, your first thought is Cross Necklaces. At least that’s what I think of. For whatever reason I’ve always thought it was cheesy to wear a cross necklace because that’s what everyone is doing. I’m all about being unique in this celebrity driven society. I feel like those that wear cross necklaces don’t really wear the christian jewelry as it’s meant to be worn. It seems to me like it’s more of a fashion statement than actually wearing the jewelry because you’re a christian. That really bothers me for some reason. I keep forgetting that I’m supposed to be talking about my friend’s website. After browsing his site, I think it looks really cool and well organized. They have a large selection of christian jewelry with tons of bracelets, rings, necklaces, pendants, etc. Jewelry isn’t for me, but if you’re into jewelry and you’re a christian then you may actually like this website. You should definitely go check it out.

A Website for Birthstone Rings

This is going to be a bit of a different post. Instead of talking about one of my friends websites, I’m going to talk about my search for a birthstone ring for my daughter. She is 11 years old and has been asking my wife and I to buy her a birthstone ring for at least a year. Since her 12th birthday is coming up, we decided it was time to splurge and buy her one. Now I know what you’re thinking. You’re probably saying, “Why would you buy your 12 year old a birthstone ring. She’ll probably lose it.” You’re actually right, that’s exactly what me and my wife had in mind. So that being said, our goal was to find a cheap ring that wouldn’t be too much of a blow to our pockets and would be easy to replace if she lost it.

So the search for the perfect, inexpensive birthstone ring began. We started out on Amazon and spent about 30 minutes reading reviews of different rings. Amazon is usually the best place to buy products online, but the recent change to where they start charging tax on all orders made me rethink buying from there. Since our price point was in the $50-$100 range, we felt that we’d be wasting some of that extra money where we could actually buy a higher quality birthstone ring. After narrowing down our selection, we decided to go to google, type in birthstone rings, and search for a product in the old google machine. At this point, I was completely blown away at how many websites were selling this type of jewelry. There were literally thousands of sites to choose from so I knew this was going to be a challenge. We clicked on the first link, which I think was a paid result, and couldn’t find what we wanted. We went to the next site, and still couldn’t find what we were looking for. At this point we were pretty frustrated. The Google Results have been awful lately, so I thought about starting on page 2 or 3 to see if any sites jumped out at me. At that instant, I found a website called Liz Nicole Jewelry. When I clicked on their birthstone rings category, I was blown away at the selection. Within a matter of seconds we were able to find the perfect birthstone ring for our daughter. We added the item to the cart, and even asked the nice Help Chat a question about our purchase and the shipping date. Since we wanted this birthstone ring to come in by her birthday, we decided to upgrade our shipping. After explaining this to the customer service representative, she upgraded our shipping at no cost. Now that’s what I call customer service!

We still haven’t given her the birthstone ring, but we’re really excited about it and highly recommend Liz Nicole Jewelry for your jewelry shopping. We don’t like to recommend sites we’re not affiliated with, but I’m happy to link to them because of their amazing customer service.

Sorority Gifts and Merchandise

I decided to visit my old college last week after craving some college football. I’m a huge college football fan and my team, the TCU Horned Frogs, have joined the Big 12 conference which is a pretty big deal. I figured what a better time to go back to my school and watch them play in a new stadium in a new conference. Going back to the school brought a lot of memories from when I was in a fraternity. I was reliving the days of going to parties and meeting sorority girls. That was the life! I actually met my wife who was in a sorority during my time there. What’s interesting, is that she used to work for a sorority gifts store called Brown Bag Etc. Since then, it has been taken over by some family friends of ours. We thought it was really cool that she worked at a store that our friends ended up buying. We decided to go check out the sorority gifts store and see what it had become over the years. I was blown away by how much more merchandise they have than when we would frequent the store. It’s amazing how they sell pretty much any type of sorority gift you can think of. When I was in school, the biggest merchandise purchases from that store were wooden paddles with the sorority logos on it. Now there have tons of sorority merchandise such as iphone cases, neon tank tops, etc. It was really cool to travel back there and see what has become of our college town and to see some old friends. Pre Kindergarten Curriculum

There’s a different subject I’d like to talk about here. My daughter is about to start pre kindergarten and me and my wife have been researching the different schools and curriculum available. Just like any parent, we want the best for our daughter. We want her to be challenged in her educational endeavors. Everyone wants to have a smart daughter, but we feel like ours is already a little bit ahead of everyone her age. The main reason for that we aren’t sure, but we think it’s because we did some home school curriculum exercises as she was getting older and those lessons have stuck with her since. She loves to play on the iphone and do educational games. Since we’re looking for schools to put her in as she nears the kindergarten age, we’ve recently found a core curriculum for kindergarteners that would fit her best. The company that created this curriculum is Frog Street Press. If you haven’t heard of this company before, do a Google search to see exactly what they offer. One of their more popular curriculum options is their pre k curriculum called Frog Street Pre-K. We found tons of great reviews online about this curriculum and are really excited about what we’ve seen. We recently contacted some schools in the area and found that they do use their lesson plans. I know it sounds funny, but we’re planning our whole process around which school has the curriculum that would fit her the best. Overall, Frog Street has great pre k curriculum lessons and we can’t wait for her to start learning!

Highlight of Another Friend’s Business – Posted 05/13/2013

I haven’t posted on this website in a long long time. To be honest, I kind of forgot about it for a while. Things in my life have been crazy and I’ll be the first to admit that I had to re-prioritize things and this blog was pushed to the bottom of the list. I was talking with a friend and he asked me if I knew of anyway to help promote his new business venture. We started talking for a while and he told me how he’s doing work with a company that sells dorm room stuff. I never realized that there could be a market big enough to facilitate sales for such a small niche, but surprisingly it’s become a huge thing. Now that kids are spending more time online they’re doing more shopping for their college dorm room online. We were sitting in a coffee shop and I did a Google search for dorm supplies and found some of his competitors. I wasn’t too impressed with their websites but I gave him a little bit of my time and walked him through some options. It seems as if the dorm bedding niché is really popular right now. Mainly because colleges provide the most uncomfortable cheap beds known to man. So that’s created a whole new market for people looking to sleep on a comfortable bed. The dorm supplies category is kind of popular too, but I think the real money is in the bedding category because the profit margins are much higher. I told him I’d come to my blog and make a post about it and hopefully send some traffic his way. He offered to pay me but I only link for free to my friend’s websites because life is all about friendships.
